Did you know that pesticides and harmful chemicals are responsible for approximately 900,000 deaths annually (source a)? Yep, that’s right 900,000 people die from coming in contact or consuming these substances. We can save more people from dying if we could teach people how to read MSDSs’. A Material Safety Data Sheet, or MSDS, is a document that contains information about potential hazards about a certain chemical and how to work safely with the chemical product. An MSDS can be found online, but also there are a list of precautions that be found within a product containing the substance. MSDS’s should be taken more seriously and not be overlooked. First off, let’s start off by asking ourselves, ‘What information can be found in a MSDS?’.†¦show more content†¦The sixth section are the precautions for safe handling and use. This section contains information on proper equipment you can use to clean up the spill. The final section are the control measure. This is an important section since it is a list of control measures that can reduce or eliminate the hazard(source C). A MSDS is made up of sections and should be read before using a product. When someone comes in contact with a harmful chemical, there can be many side effects from irritation to even death. Let’s take into instance sodium hypochlorite, a chemical found within bleach. Bleach is a common product used when doing laundry, specifically used to whiten clothes with stains. Sodium hypochlorite has a numerous number of effects if it comes into contact with you or fire. If you were to inhale this substance, you would get a burning sensation in your nose. If you were to come in contact with sodium hypochlorite physically, you would have redness surrounding the area and you would have painful skin burns. To add on, if your eyes were to come in contact with sodium hypochlorite, you will have severe deep painful burns.(source A) Moreover, another harmful chemical that you may not realize you use or are near by is Diethanolamine. This substance can be found in soap, an everyday product used multiple times per week.
